<br />
This past weekend I had an itch to make a quilt. It's been entirely too long, and with two friends just having babies in the past month, it was good timing! I wanted something simple that I could put together in one or two naptimes, so I took to pinterest for inspiration, and came across <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/120049146293615258/" target="_blank">this quilt</a> and knew it was just perfect. I for one believe you can never have too much chevron or herringbone in your life so this quilt fit the bill.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16723409069" title="DSC_1006 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_1006" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8716/16723409069_9bfa73dded_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I did a little stash shopping, and dug out this <a href="https://www.fabric.com/buy/dk-292/urban-zoologie-whales-bright?&cm_mmc=Google-_-Products-_-Products%20Listings-_-Ads&CAWELAID=172000510000025131&CAGPSPN=pla&catargetid=172000510000277964&cadevice=c&gclid=CjwKEAjwlsSoBRDoid2ihqnjjlISJABZoG9-FroOXtKrYFwF4Dt0FDs6z43Y-KHAgl0_SDO8tLEugxoCHYTw_wcB" target="_blank">Ann Kelle whale print</a>, one of my favorite kiddie prints. I picked out a few other blues, greens and yellows that coordinated, and got to cutting! <br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16909591595" title="DSC_0999 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0999" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8720/16909591595_be3865b552_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
A naptime and a half later this quilt top was born. I just love it to pieces, and if I ever have a boy myself, I think this is the inspiration for his one day nursery. So bright and bold, and FUN!<br />
<br />

<br />
I'm hoping to get this basted and quilted this weekend, so it can be off to its new home for lots of baby snuggles! <br />

<a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8KAE2wk0FQYRGY2X2lxMGppTGc/view?usp=sharing" target="_blank">PDF Version</a><br />
Folded Finished Size: 6.5" x 10.5"<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>You will need:</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Outer fabric: 22" x 10.5"</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Lining fabric: 22" x 10.5"</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Binding fabric: (2) 11" x 2.5", (2) 13.5" x 2.5"<br />
Sew-on Velcro 2" x 1/2"" </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Fusible fleece*: 22" x 10.5"</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Iron-On Vinyl*: (2) 22" x 10.5"</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i>*Optional-fusible fleece is highly recommended if using quilting cotton weight fabric</i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>Instructions</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1. Apply fusible fleece to wrong side of outer fabric</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
2. Following package instructions, apply iron vinyl to right sides of both outer fabric and lining fabric.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16512633788" title="DSC_0925 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0925" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8641/16512633788_544a13b8bb_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
3. Layer outer fabric and lining fabric wrong sides together and pin. Baste layers together using 1/8" seam allowance. <b>Note:</b> If using iron-on vinyl, keep your pins within 1/4" of the fabric edge so the pin marks are hidden within the seam allowances of the finished product. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16077890814" title="DSC_0926 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0926" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8611/16077890814_c97c5c3c2f_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></i><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
4. Center velcro 2" in from each 10.5" edge of the outer fabric (below picture shows 3", pretend it shows 2"), and sew in place.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16698921081" title="DSC_0927 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0927" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8682/16698921081_a959289400_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
5. Take the (2) 11" x 2.5" binding strips, fold in half lengthwise, press. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16492927777" title="DSC_0928 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0928" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8640/16492927777_46c6a8e0d7_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
6. We will attach (1) binding strip to each 10.5" edge in the same manner as applying quilt binding. Align the raw edges of the binding with the outer fabric raw edge of the 10.5" side, sew with 1/4" seam allowance.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16492927567" title="DSC_0930 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0930" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8682/16492927567_57d1d6cd6a_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
7. Fold the finished edge around to the back of the fabric (lining fabric side). Stitch in the ditch from the outer fabric side, catching the finished edge of the binding on the lining side of the fabric sandwich.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16512817060" title="DSC_0931 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0931" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8627/16512817060_524655deab_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
8. Fold each 10.5" edge in towards the center, creating (2) pockets that measure 4.5" x 10.5". Baste in place following basting stitches from step 3.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16674275836" title="DSC_0932 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0932" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8616/16674275836_d7ef057788_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
9. Fold short edges of remaining (2) binding strips 1/4", press. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16674275366" title="DSC_0935 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0935" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8636/16674275366_a2f87c317e_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
10. Fold in half lengthwise, as in step 5. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
11. Apply binding strip to each unfinished edge as in steps 6 and 7. I prefer to begin applying binding to the "outer fabric" of the pouch, and fold binding around to the inner "pocket side". </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16492926107" title="DSC_0937 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0937" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8589/16492926107_57a6c92414_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
12. Fill your new stylish diaper clutch full of diapers and wipes, enjoy!</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm so excited to be here today as part of the <a href="http://ideas.stitchcraftcreate.co.uk/little-lady-liberty-blog-hop/" target="_blank">Little Lady Liberty Blog Hop</a> to celebrate the release of <a href="http://alicecarolineblog.co.uk/" target="_blank">Alice Caroline</a>'s book <a href="http://www.interweavestore.com/sew-pretty-for-little-girls" target="_blank">Sew Pretty for Little Girls</a> (<a href="http://www.interweavestore.com/sew-pretty-for-little-girls-ebook" target="_blank">ebook version</a>) (called Little Lady Liberty for UK peeps). When Alice asked if I wanted to take part, yes couldn't come out of my mouth fast enough. Aside from the book being chocked full of 20 beautiful projects for little girls, its dripping in Liberty fabric eye candy!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhs-AaY06YL0Hw3rq4hx5Xa_O9xbR_5VZ-t6dwaf3o50ke6FoyjGnnN-QhaDC16h-8d_X60zqCXgcOAPh-PraCOsWovUnNv0qsR0ydTBcsl_RdbadjNWNGNKR2WaWJYpIgt4tC-6k9BeTst/s1600/Untitled.png" /><br />
<br />
<img alt="LLL1" src="http://aspoonfulofsugardesigns.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/LLL1.jpg" height="616" width="640" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The book is divided into three sections, Blissfull Bedrooms, Twirly Girly Garments and Pretty Little Things. It was almost impossible to pick just one project to make but ultimately I decided on the Fleur Embellished Party Skirt, because Nora definitely cannot have too many skirts in her closet.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16601960448" title="DSC_0967 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0967" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8660/16601960448_f68f88ceae_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I chose a Cotton + Steel lawn print to get a similar drape and hand as the Liberty fabrics shown in Alice's book, and I cannot be happier with how it turned out. I altered the length of the skirt slightly as the book shows cutting measurements for average size for a 6-7 year old girl, but the size customization tips in the pattern worked like a charm. Nora gives her seal of approval too! <br />

So I've been toying with purchasing a serger for a while now. Pretty much every time I veer into garment sewing territory, I get the itch. "This would be so much easier if I had a serger" runs on play back the entire time I am sewing. Usually my garment sewing kick is incredibly short lived and I forget about it for a few months. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Enter the <a href="http://www.welcometothemousehouse.com/2013/12/the-julia-womens-cardigan-its-here.html" target="_blank">Julia Cardigan</a>. I saw someone post about this cardigan on Instagram, and immediately decided I needed to make it. I am eternally cold at work, so cardigans are always in short supply, and I can never have enough. <br />
<br />
I have never ever sewn with knits so I ventured in to Joanns, picked a jersey lighweight knit and a stretch needle, took advice from the lady at the cutting counter "just go slow, use a jersey needle and a zig zag stitch," went home and sewed with regular sewing machine. All was well, the cardigan turned out great, sewing with knits was not at all intimidating and I decided I needed many many more Julia cardigans in my closet. This pretty much sealed the deal that a serger was now in my near future. A few Google and Pinterest searches, and I learned that a serger is pretty much a knit's best friend and the deal was sealed. A few more Google-ings of "best beginner serger" led me to the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000CBK1L/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1" target="_blank">Brother 1034D</a>, and 2 days later this guy showed up on my door - thank you Amazon Prime! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16792252822" title="Untitled by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="Untitled" height="640" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8690/16792252822_acd4d9b4ed_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
So after I got my new friend out of the box and got her threaded (huge thanks to this <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ohtf7H_gyc" target="_blank">video</a>) I decided to give this<a href="http://www.made-by-rae.com/2012/02/flashback-tee/" target="_blank"> Flashback tee</a> a try. I had purchased this pattern thinking Nora can always use a few new tees and it did not disappoint.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16763663526" title="DSC_0979 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0979" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8728/16763663526_a43e241e2b_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16167225654" title="DSC_0983 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0983" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7587/16167225654_8f15d4dca1_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
These sewed up like a dream and so incredibly fast thanks to my new serger friend. I just love how finished and professional my seams now look! I have more knits on the way from <a href="http://www.girlcharlee.com/" target="_blank">Girl Charlee</a> and have at least 2 more of these tees I want to stitch up. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16789537775" title="DSC_0976 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0976" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8696/16789537775_6699227107_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I am still getting the hang of how the serger works, I'm very good at edges that I don't need to worry about backstitching, but those finishing seams I'm a little in the dark about, as you can't make a serger go in reverse. If any of you have tips or suggestions, I'd love to hear them!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16601957808" title="DSC_0986 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0986" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7615/16601957808_30bc8e6704_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16169600863" title="DSC_0989 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0989" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8577/16169600863_697eb5c08e_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Nora seemed to give her stamp of approval, as they certainly didn't slow her down from partaking in her favorite activity of taking each and every book off the shelf and then moving on to the next exciting adventure of a 17 month old. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16169601583" title="DSC_0985 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0985" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8697/16169601583_599d2ca9a1_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
She liked them so much she even wanted to try on the second shirt, as she is incredibly helpful like that. Yes, that's what it was, it certainly wasn't that she wanted to eat the pink washi tape. No that wasn't it at all.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16789537295" title="DSC_0982 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0982" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8687/16789537295_399e86526b_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Stay tuned for more adventures with my new serger friend! Pretty please send your favorite tips and tutorials my way, I would absolutely LOVE to hear about them!<br />

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16512808420" title="DSC_0944 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0944" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8616/16512808420_9c07f59599_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I decided this weekend that I needed a break from fabric sorting and organizational list making with regards to <a href="http://www.sewcraftyjess.blogspot.com/2015/02/honestcraftroom.html" target="_blank">this hot mess</a>, and just wanted to sew something. I wasn't overly picky, I just wanted to make something that could be completed in a naptime. A diaper clutch wasn't something I thought I actually needed up until now, but now that we are finally getting to the point that we can head out somewhere for a short time and not lug the entire Goliath size diaper bag with us, I have been thinking I could use something to stash a few diapers and wipes so that they aren't loosely floating around in my purse.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16512624708" title="DSC_0943 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0943" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8634/16512624708_81314be0db_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Enter this adorable (if I say so myself) diaper clutch. I checked around for a tutorial quickly and couldn't settle on something that met all my needs (small, cute, not overly time consuming to make, and didn't have a built in changing pad as I keep one of those in my car all the time anyways). So what does one do? Of course scour pinterest for inspiration, get to sketching and traslate into fabric!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16700203125" title="DSC_0950 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0950" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8675/16700203125_08b68e65b0_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I purchased some <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0011E0R84/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1" target="_blank">Thermoweb Heat'n Bond Iron On Vinyl</a> and thought this would be the perfect project to try this stuff out on. Oh. My. Goodness. How have gone this long without trying this stuff out! I love it, and in fact am thinking of projects just so I can use more of this stuff. In case you are not familiar, it turns any sort of standard cotton fabric into an oil cloth like fabric by ironing on a clear vinyl to the right side of the fabric. Genius. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16700203525" title="DSC_0947 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0947" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8598/16700203525_d0ed07f319_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Since this little clutch was purely for my benefit (lets face it, mommy does about 99.5% of the diaper changes when out and about) I cut into my Cotton + Steel stash, as what better fabric to tote diapers and wipes around in than some super fun <a href="https://instagram.com/p/zGhW0ntiAO/?modal=true" target="_blank">View Finders</a>, and pink ones at that!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16512807930" title="DSC_0949 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0949" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8627/16512807930_d76d20383a_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I really could not be more pleased with how this turned out, and lucky for you, dear readers, a tutorial is in the works, you know in case you also want to carry diapers and wipes in style. I want to make a second clutch and play with tweaking some of the measurements before finishing the tutorial, but it should be good to go by next week.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16512808120" title="DSC_0948 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0948" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8670/16512808120_a66b99774a_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Just a quick <a href="http://www.sewcraftyjess.blogspot.com/2015/02/honestcraftroom.html" target="_blank">#honestcraftroom</a> update, the stars have aligned, as I have convinced my hubby to take an Ikea trip with me on Saturday (I may have bribed him with his choice of lunch venues, and spun it as a date), AND my mom is free to babysit Nora for the afternoon, double score! Hopefully by Saturday evening I will at least own the necessary tools to get organized!<br />
<br />
Oh! And in the name of decluttering, I have found more fabric I'm planning on destashing on Instagram in the next few days! If you don't already follow me, I can be found here at <a href="https://instagram.com/sewcraftyjess/" target="_blank">SewCraftyJess</a>, and my destash account here at <a href="https://instagram.com/sewcraftyjessdestash/" target="_blank">SewCraftyJessDestash</a></div>
Jessica Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00093817427610204489noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4778503565905793642.post-7656338432722043282015-02-24T16:19:00.000-05:002015-02-24T16:19:35.893-05:00#honestcraftroom<div style="text-align: center;">
It's been brought to my attention <i>several times </i>((thank you husband)) <ahem husband=""> that my sewing space is not what you would call the neatest space in the house. Yes yes, I am perfectly 100% aware of this fact and did not need reminding in the slightest, but here's the thing, when my free time/sewing time is already reduced to almost nothing, the absolute last idea that pops into my mind is "lets clean this sewing room up!" when a free moment arises. Yes, I can gaurantee that phrase is never ever uttered. I simply put my blinders on and get stitching. Sure, while I'm stealing a few moments to sew here and there the inner dialog is going "we really need to get this space under control" but it is quickly pushed aside and forgotten about until next time. </ahem></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So anyways, after a few months now of wearing those blinders, I can't ignore it anymore, and I'm resigned to the fact that a major overhaul is necessary. I can't believe I'm going to post this on the inter-webs for all to see, but here's what I'm working with:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16449198400" title="Untitled by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="Untitled" height="500" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8659/16449198400_2f2c2d9dee.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
Ok so this view isn't that terrible, just needs a little bit of organizing and decluttering. Oh but wait. There is definitely more:<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16014294854" title="Untitled by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="Untitled" height="500" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8675/16014294854_7c10f9e301.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
Yikes!! Just looking at this I'm honestly surprised I haven't broken an ankle maneuvering down here yet. Ok now that I've shared my dirty secret and you're all thinking "what a slob, I can't believe she works like this," let me share a few in my defenses.<br />
<br />
<i>In my defense </i>my sewing area is in our finished basement and it is right off of the garage, where we come in and out of on a daily basis, so my sewing space has a tendency to become the "dumping ground" for all things that don't yet have a home in our home. Like that diaper box that is filled with party decorations from Nora's first birthday party. <i>In October</i>. Um, yeah. And then there's the fact....Oh I could go on and on, but point of the matter is I let it get to be a disaster zone, and am ready to face facts that something needs to be done. like now.<br />
<br />
I'll be honest, I've been thinking about writing this #craftroomorganization post for some time now, and just got overwhelmed at the thought of what exactly to do to first. So I didn't do anything at all. Last week I decided to just take a step, any step towards a cleaner more organized sewing and crafting space, and decided to start with cleaning house in the fabric scrap department!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16014911644" title="Untitled by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="Untitled" height="500" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8626/16014911644_f1a67642b2.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
I dug through each and every scrap bin under my ironing board and cleaned house. Like got rid of it all by means of a destash on Instagram. If you don't follow me already, I can be found <a href="https://instagram.com/sewcraftyjess/" target="_blank">here</a> and my destash account can be found <a href="https://instagram.com/sewcraftyjessdestash/" target="_blank">here at SewCraftyJessDestash</a>. I can't believe the amount of scraps I was hoarding, to the tune of <i>over 35 yards of scraps by weight</i>. Whaaaat??? Insane I know. Anyways, my sewing room is 35 yards of fabric lighter and I feel great! Definitely stay tuned to<a href="https://instagram.com/sewcraftyjessdestash/" target="_blank"> SewCraftyJessDestash</a>, I have a whole bunch of FQs and actual yardage I'm looking to purge in the near future. <br />
<br />
So what to do next? Good thing Pinterest is around to show me the craft room organizing way. Here's what I have so far:<br />
<br />
<a data-pin-board-width="600" data-pin-do="embedBoard" data-pin-scale-height="820" data-pin-scale-width="150" href="http://www.pinterest.com/sewcraftyjess/craft-room/">Follow Jessica Kelly's board craft room on Pinterest.</a><br />
<br />
I'm thinking I need more open shelving storage. I'll have to take some measurements, but I'm hoping one or two <a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90275844/#/00275848" target="_blank">Ikea Kallax book shelves</a> will help, and I can't resist adding one of these <a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30216536/" target="_blank">Raskog carts</a>, definitely in blue. I also need to take advantage of wall space, so I'm thinking a <a href="http://www.gingersnapcrafts.com/2015/01/how-to-make-giant-peg-board-tutorial.html" target="_blank">big DIY peg board</a> would be great, with some of <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/120049146293481998/" target="_blank">these hanging buckets</a>. The wheels are turnings so stay tuned for more to come!<br />
<br />
Any craft room organization tips you swear by?? Have any pins I need to check out?? Please send them my way, I would love to know!<br />

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16267546699" title="DSC_0815 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0815" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7398/16267546699_7e76fccd2a_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Now that this quilt is safely in its new home, enjoying lots of snuggles with baby A, I can share here with you all! A very good friend of mine recently had her third baby - a baby girl after having two boys! Naturally baby girl needed her own quilt, and it needed to be extra girly, as I'm sure baby A's big brothers will do their best to teach her all about Tonka trucks and John Deere Tractors. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16267547779" title="DSC_0811 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0811" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7439/16267547779_e6209ed9a9_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Big brothers J and T of course have their own quilts so baby A's quilt now makes three in their household! You can read about J's Jungle quilt <a href="http://sewcraftyjess.blogspot.com/2010/07/finished-jungle-quilt-part-2.html" target="_blank">here</a> and T's quilt-in-a-day <a href="http://www.sewcraftyjess.blogspot.com/2012/09/quilt-in-day.html" target="_blank">here</a>. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16267890427" title="DSC_0806 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0806" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8651/16267890427_b987d8e170_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16453794865" title="DSC_0805 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0805" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8590/16453794865_5cd4dc1e24_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
My friend and her husband have waited until delivery day to find out the gender of all three of their kiddos (more power to them!) so from the minute we got the "It's a girl" message, I knew I wanted to cut into my <a href="http://www.roseroomquilts.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=13_14&products_id=29" target="_blank">Far Far Away fabric</a> for this special little lady's quilt. I fussy cut the block centers, and paired them with soft pinks, purples, oranges and yellows from my stash to finish this delicious baby girl quilt.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16267549089" title="DSC_0804 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0804" height="625" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7293/16267549089_d476f8fd19_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />

<br />
I couldn't find a backing fabric that worked with the quilt top from my stash, and really wanted to work from my stash, so I pieced together a back from left over scraps from the quilt top. It always feels so satisfying to create a quilt from start to finish from stash fabrics!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16452845802" title="DSC_0823 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0823" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7301/16452845802_7abe46d8c7_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
For the binding I found this pretty pinky-purple print that I believe is a Moda print, and that's about all I can tell you about it! I know its been sitting in my stash for quite some time and felt great to put it to use!<br />

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16452607052" title="DSC_0838 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0838" height="640" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8607/16452607052_534e320f29_z.jpg" width="427" /></a><br />
<br />
I am so incredibly excited to be writing this post, as it means the year long <a href="http://thefrostedpumpkinstitchery.bigcartel.com/product/2014-sampler" target="_blank">Once Upon a Time Sampler</a> I began working on <i>one year ago</i> is now complete!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16451809601" title="DSC_0836-1 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0836-1" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7412/16451809601_82733544a0_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I'll say it now, pardon the picture heavy post, but I just can't help myself! There isn't one thing that I don't absolutely love about this. Each month would bring a huge smile when I saw the new pattern in my inbox, and would anxiously get to stitching each little block. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16265857628" title="DSC_0833_edited-1 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0833_edited-1" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7443/16265857628_0ea25847b8_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Call me sentimental, but I just look back at those early months and remember my stitching time was usually with Nora laying next to me on the couch or <overshare alert=""> while I was <look away="" coming="" overshare=""> pumping. Ugh that dreaded pump. Anyways, this was my compromise with myself, I got to do something fun while <i>doing something not so fun.</i> Anyways, I look at July's block and remember I stitched that one at the beach. </look></overshare><br />
<overshare alert=""><br /></overshare>
<overshare alert=""><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16427560166" title="DSC_0832_edited-1 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0832_edited-1" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7371/16427560166_19f079bfc0_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></overshare><br />
<br />
The majority of these blocks were stitched while sitting on my corner of the couch, after Nora was put to sleep and the hubs and I caught up on some DVR and enjoyed a quiet evening alone. For the moment, cross stitching is my quick little portable project that I can pick up here and there and work on little bits at a time.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16265858138" title="DSC_0829 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0829" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7304/16265858138_108c73cae8_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
This sampler is destined for a spot on Nora's wall, I think she'll get a kick out of it as she gets older and we read longer fairy tales (right now our attention span can make it through Goodnight Moon, and that's about it), and we can point to each picture that matches the story. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16265858388" title="DSC_0828 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0828" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7418/16265858388_436d8d3e4a_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I have grand plans to get this framed, but I'm not sure I want to spend hundred(s) of dollars--and don't you dare tell my husband that's how much it cost to get my Gingerbread Lane Sampler framed--he thinks it was $50. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it. I've tried to frame them myself, and it just doesn't look as nice. I've seen Michaels does quasi-custom framing, maybe that will be a good compromise? Anyone have any framing tips that would help? I'm all ears!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16453556715" title="DSC_0831 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0831" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7326/16453556715_902afc3185_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
For now I just like to pull it out and run my hands over all those stitches, admiring the hours and hours and hours spent on this little guy! Happy stitching!</div>
Jessica Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00093817427610204489noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4778503565905793642.post-57355403855607823692015-01-27T10:41:00.000-05:002015-01-27T10:41:36.380-05:00First quilt top of 2015!<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15760690573" title="DSC_0643[1].JPG by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0643[1].JPG" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8572/15760690573_49ed511d45_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I'm proud to say my first quilt top of 2015 is completed! And January isn't even over yet, I'm giving myself a big pat on the back here. And more so, the actual quilt is even complete, I'm just waiting on some decent weather to get back outside and snap a few pictures! We luckily missed the brunt of the blizzard of 2015, being in Pittsburgh, we got about 6 inches or so yesterday and that was it. I know I'm probably crazy, but I sort of like getting those huge snowstorms! Yes, call me nuts, but I'll never be sad about a free snow day :-)<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16193301040" title="DSC_0647[1].JPG by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0647[1].JPG" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7442/16193301040_ca26406f22_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
There is absolutely nothing that I don't 1000% love about this quilt, its just so pretty and girly, and reminds me of warmer temps and summer. I mean if its not going to snow enough to get me out of work, then I'd rather it be 80 degrees and summer. #amiright???<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16193318200" title="DSC_0654[2].JPG by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0654[2].JPG" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7425/16193318200_5fc52ab472_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
This quilt is destined for a very good friend who just had her third baby, and after two boys, now has a baby girl to dress in pink and wear pretty dresses and headbands! I wanted this quilt to be almost too sweet, as I'm sure little baby A will have PLENTY of Tonka trucks and Matchbox cars in her life, with those two older brothers of hers. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16194487149" title="DSC_0653[1].JPG by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0653[1].JPG" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8580/16194487149_ff7a5ed47b_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I cut into my <a href="http://www.roseroomquilts.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=13_14&products_id=29" target="_blank">Far Far Away bundle </a>and fussy cut a few of my favorite prints, including the unicorns, Princess and the Pea prints as well as a few frogs and snails, and paired them with pretty oranges, yellows and pinks from my stash to put together this super sweet baby quilt.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16193295410" title="DSC_0644[1].JPG by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0644[1].JPG" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8571/16193295410_7312965818_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16193318200" title="DSC_0654[2].JPG by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0654[2].JPG" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7425/16193318200_5fc52ab472_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I'm also playing around with my new camera lens Santa brought for Christmas, a 50 mm f/1.8 prime lens, I think I'm getting the hang of it, at least for stationary objects like quilts, but having a trickier time with moving subjects, like miss Nora who is on the go 100% of the time, usually climbing on something or other, so if anyone has any great tutorials they've come across or resources, I'd love to hear about it!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15760709163" title="DSC_0650[1].JPG by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0650[1].JPG" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7366/15760709163_3e38a2c83b_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
As soon as I have a good day to snap some pics, I'll be back with the finished quilt, and can finally get this quilt off to Miss A so it can be properly snuggled with all that baby goodness. </div>

I can hardly believe we have already said goodbye to 2014 and hello to 2015! When I look back on 2014 I'm of course consumed with images of our sweet Nora and how crazy fast she is growing, but when I focus on what went on in my sewing room, I'm actually pleasantly surprised that I did complete a few quilts!</div>

<br />
Of course I wasn't nearly as productive as I have been in previous years, but you know what, I'm ok with it. I'm figuring out how to fit a hobby that I enjoy into my life now, and yes that means that days go by that my sewing machine doesn't see any action, but it brings all the more joy and satisfaction when I get to sit behind and work on projects I truly enjoy. <br />
<br />
I actually have my first quilt of 2015 complete, that was made of these yummy stack of fabric, that I paired with a few prints from my <a href="http://www.roseroomquilts.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=13_14&products_id=29" target="_blank">Far Far Away bundle</a> that I have been <strike>hoarding</strike> saving for the perfect quilt:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://instagram.com/sewcraftyjess/" target="_blank"><img alt="Untitled" height="500" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7465/16326728855_4218e52dfc.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
I'll be sharing more about this quilt soon, I want mommy and baby to be surprised when it shows up on their doorstep!<br />
<br />
As far as what 2015 has in store, my main goal is to keep things flexible. I always want my time spent sewing to be relaxing and enjoyable. The first way to make that not happen is to set goals and deadlines that end up being unreachable. <br />
<br />
So my plan for 2015 is to not have a plan! We'll see where that takes me, I'm sure there will be plenty of baby quilts, and I'd love to dig back into my WIP closet and finish a few of those off, I mean I loved those projects enough to start them, why not finish them up? <br />
<br />
I'm also making it a point to sew from my stash (and scrap bins!) Of course I'm sure there will be new fabric that makes its way to me, but my fabric shelves have runneth over, so the best way to remedy that problem is to sew it into something lovely. <br />
<br />
Thanks again for checking in with this blog every now and again, it really does bring joy to be able to share my quilting and sewing projects with a group of people who are just as passionate as I am!<br />
<br />
Happy 2015!<br />
<br />

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15383324724" title="DSC_0422 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0422" height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7495/15383324724_3e6516bf8a_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Happy holidays! Is it just me or is anyone else completely shocked by the fact that in 2 weeks Christmas will be over. I of course love gifting handmade gifts, however my "to make" list seems to be growing daily, while the number of days until Christmas are dwindling. I'm fairly confident I'll get it all done, starting with this quilt that will be given to a friend for Christmas. I'm certain she will absolutely love it, so I'm pushing to get it finished. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15818320410" title="DSC_0423 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0423" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8631/15818320410_4aa35667b8_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I have had this quilt idea in my head ever since the first <a href="http://www.sewcraftyjess.blogspot.com/2012/04/granny.html" target="_blank">granny squares quilt I made back in 2012</a>. Nora uses the original granny almost daily, and I always think "I really want to make an adult sized version of this baby quilt," and that's saying something, as I really do not tend to repeat quilt patterns once I've made them the first time. I'd much rather play with a new design, than something I've already done. So to have this niggling voice egging me on to make another <i>for the past 3 years </i>is really saying something.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15385952033" title="DSC_0428 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0428" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8594/15385952033_357ce9698b_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
There is absolutely nothing that I do not love about this quilt. In fact it will take much self control not to hoard this one for me and actually gift it to said friend. I cut into my half yard bundle of<a href="http://www.dragonfly-fabrics.com/modern-lace-fat-quarter-bundle/" target="_blank"> Modern Lace</a> that I purchased from <a href="http://www.dragonfly-fabrics.com/" target="_blank">Dragonfly Fabrics </a> and I don't think that there could be a more perfect marriage than this pattern and this fabric. Just the right amount of vintage traditional charm with just enough of a whimsy modern touch. It's love.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/16005572355" title="DSC_0424 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0424" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8626/16005572355_f5443fb210_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I upsized the individual squares to 5.5" unfinished (5" finished) and assembled in the same fashion that <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/6897581834/" target="_blank">I did here</a>. Lots and lots of chain piecing. And I can happily say I only had to seam rip one row after I sewed it backwards! Win.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15819574139" title="DSC_0425 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0425" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7516/15819574139_033e0f2641_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br /><br />
The goal is to get this guy basted this weekend so I can get quilting during Monday's nap time, wish me luck that I'll have a finished quilt to show in the next week, and happy holiday sewing!<br />

<br /></div>
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15332202383" title="DSC_0398 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0398" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7504/15332202383_4c4ae8a16e_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Who can believe it! I'm blogging...about a quilt! I feel like its been forever that I've finished a <i>real</i> quilt, and probably that's because its been far too long since I have. This has actually been finished for a few weeks, but I've been waiting for a good day to get outside and take some pictures! This whole winter thing with its crazy early sunsets is cramping my quilt photographing style. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15766088047" title="DSC_0386 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0386" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7497/15766088047_2cb6fc695a_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Anyways, back to the quilt. I made this for my soon to be nephew, who is due to join this world later this month! My sister in law is looking ready to have that baby any day, so maybe baby G won't make his mama wait <i>11 days past her due date</i>, like another little lady I know. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15766086497" title="DSC_0394 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0394" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7470/15766086497_7ec951dde7_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
My sister in law is doing a woodland creatures sort of theme to the nursery, so of course this <a href="http://www.roseroomquilts.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=13_14&products_id=46" target="_blank">Woodwinked fabric bundle</a> I picked up at <a href="http://www.roseroomquilts.com/" target="_blank">Rose Room Quilts</a> was just the ticket. I absolutely love that this little boy quilt has zero blue in it! Its just such a knee jerk reaction that when I pull fabrics for a boy baby quilt, blue is the first color to be included. This is a nice reminder that blue doesn't have to be the starring color every time. Although, I will say when I showed my husband, his first comment was "there's no blue." <i>Seriously hubby, leave the quilt making to the professionals :-)</i><br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15765796569" title="DSC_0391 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0391" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8656/15765796569_26d2996c0a_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I found this super soft minky-like fabric at Joanns, and it is just perfect for the back, because not only does it leave the quilt incredibly soft and snuggle worthy, but follows along with the woodland creatures theme. Like the <a href="http://www.sewcraftyjess.blogspot.com/2014/11/snazzed-up-cheater-quilt.html" target="_blank">cheater quilt I recently finished</a>, I chose to omit the batting, quilting together just the quilt top and backing print. Because the backing has such a heavy weight to it, this quilt still has a nice weight to it, without being overly bulky and heavy. I also applique'd baby's first initial using my cricut, <a href="http://www.sewcraftyjess.blogspot.com/2014/11/snazzed-up-cheater-quilt.html" target="_blank">like I did with baby N's quilt</a>.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15332203063" title="DSC_0393 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0393" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8582/15332203063_6855f5c26d_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
The binding is a <a href="https://www.fabric.com/buy/ex-026/quilters-linen-print-straw" target="_blank">quilters linen cotton</a> in straw from Robert Kaufman. I have had this in my stash <i>forever, </i>like before I discovered my love of grey as a neutral, so it felt great to use it up! As for the quilt top construction, you can read more about the size of triangles and assembly method I used in <a href="http://www.sewcraftyjess.blogspot.com/2014/09/woodwinked-baby-quilt-top.html" target="_blank">this post</a> about the quilt top.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15951163452" title="DSC_0385 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0385" height="427" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7470/15951163452_bee4352c0f_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
We'll be waiting to see if baby G makes it here for Christmas this year, or if he'd rather be a New Years baby instead, but either way, we can't wait to meet him!<br />

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15836287322" title="Untitled by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="Untitled" height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7478/15836287322_06d2de4bf3_z.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Welcome baby Jordan to the world! No I haven't been holding out on you, he's not actually mine, but he's my very first nephew and godson, so he's pretty close to mine! I don't think my sister-in-law would mind. Ok maybe she would, but I fully plan on getting as many newborn snuggles as I can from this little guy!<br />
<br />
Nora hasn't yet met her new cousin, but will in the next few days, I'm definitely a little nervous, as Jordan isn't quite durable enough to stand up to how Nora "plays" with her friends. Daycare told me the one day that she was "using the other children as drums" during play time. I guess I'll take peace in knowing she can stand up for herself. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Anyways there is a quilty point to this post (not that sharing newborn tiny adorable-ness isn't a perfectly good reason to post), but I realized I never shared my absolute favorite burp cloths with you!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15758993941" title="DSC_0226 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0226" height="424" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3946/15758993941_344b41e71b_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
When I was pregnant with Nora, burp cloths were one thing I was bound and determined to make oodles of. From what I had heard you couldn't have enough (true story, you can't), and the ones available in the store just looked puny. I made a few versions. I made a <a href="http://www.sewcraftyjess.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html">flannel/chennile version</a> using <a href="http://www.danamadeit.com/2012/04/celebrate-baby-tutorial-burp-cloth-gift-sets.html">Made's tutorial</a>, and while these were good and quite absorbent, they weren't quite big enough for what I really wanted, and ended up running a little on the pricier side to get the chenille that I could not find locally. I also made a few using cloth diapers and sewed on some pretty accent fabric like these I made <a href="http://sewcraftyjess.blogspot.com/2010/07/oh-baby.html">way back in the day</a>. These were nice, and while the quilting cotton sure made them look pretty, they weren't the most absorbent burp clothes I'd ever used.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15575016989" title="DSC_0233 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0233" height="424" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5613/15575016989_97e33684c0_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Enter one of my super sweet patients who in talking during one of her appointments, discovered we both shared a love of sewing and quilting! She brought me the nicest baby gift just before Nora was born, and included was a huge stack of hand made burp cloths. She said these were all of her grown children's favorites for their kids, so when I anxiously asked what she used and how she made them, she told me she used two pieces of flannel, wrong sides together and serged those puppies into THE BEST burp cloth I have ever used. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15758992231" title="DSC_0238 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0238" height="424" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3954/15758992231_a0d45db180_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Seriously now. These ended up being the best burp clothes we used while Nora was in her prime spit up stage. Even my husband would ask for "the good burp clothes" when he fed her, and they are so. simple. to make.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15737162306" title="DSC_0225 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0225" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7522/15737162306_a0bc901d96_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Now, if you have a serger there isn't much of a tutorial, as the steps are: 1. (2) pieces of pre-washed flannel approximately 11" x 17" (this will give you 4 nice sized burp clothes from 1 yard of fabric) 2. align WRONG sides together. 3. Serge edges. and DONE!<br />
<br />
Now if you are like me, and don't have a serger, follow the super simple tutorial, which is almost just as simple as actually using a serger, but uses a sewing machine instead.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15833512291" title="15758992231_a0d45db180_z by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="15758992231_a0d45db180_z" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7534/15833512291_57a5bba7e2_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>You will need:</b> </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
(2) pieces PRE-WASHED flannel appx 11 x 17 (I found this to be about the biggest size to get me 4 complete burp clothes from a PRE-WASHED 1 yard piece of flannel)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Sewing Machine</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Edging Foot</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15762430482" title="DSC_0096 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0096" height="424" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3942/15762430482_c78e90f705_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1. Align 2 pieces of flannel WRONG sides together. I like to press both pieces together to make sure they are as smooth and flat as possible. Pin generously to avoid shifting while sewing.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15649983179" title="15250322426_cd52e93de1_z by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="15250322426_cd52e93de1_z" height="424" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5607/15649983179_ea60d53d34_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
2. Find your edging foot for your sewing machine. I sew on a Husqvarna Viking Sapphire 835 and mine is a foot "J". basically this foot looks like a fairly normal foot, only has a small bar, where the arrow in the above picture is pointing. You will use this to line up the edge of your fabric, so the feed dogs don't "eat" the edges.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15762429292" title="DSC_0100 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0100" height="424" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5609/15762429292_05e69ed889_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
3. Attach your foot, align fabric edge with metal bar and select a zig zag stitch. I like about 5mm width and 4-5 mm spacing. This is what the reading on my machine looks like:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15140900494" title="DSC_0099 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0099" height="424" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3946/15140900494_819e1685d1_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
4. You will notice that the needle will sew over that bar and form an encased edge, similar to how a serger works. Sew around all 4 edges, backstitching at the start and stop point, and that's it! You are now in possession of one of the best burp clothes, that took less than 5 minutes to make!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15760870725" title="DSC_0236 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0236" height="640" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3937/15760870725_d4b332333f_z.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was a little worried about how the edges would hold up to multiple washings, as the edges aren't totally encased like when serging, but I have been pleasantly surprised so far! The above picture is how the edges look after 3 washings. Not too shabby!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now go make lots of these for all your friends and family members (and yourself!) because they will LOVE these!</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15140825324" title="DSC_0382 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0382" height="424" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3949/15140825324_7c90f9dc65_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
My signature welcome baby gift to friends and acquaintances and even friends of friends and family is now almost exclusively a baby quilt. Shocking I know. Now that I've been at this quilting thing for a few years, I love hearing how these quilts seem to be used and loved for years and years by their recipients, and that just makes my heart happy. <br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15758920851" title="DSC_0371 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0371" height="424" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3949/15758920851_fa1b8c0e44_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
So when I found out that an old college friend had her baby, and it was a girl I went into immediate baby quilt gift mode and tried to think of something I could put together quickly to get to the new mommy and her bundle of joy. Usually I plan ahead, but they didn't find out the gender, and I've found its much more fun to wait until baby is here and make a quilt more tailored to a boy or girl.<br />
<br />
So, as I was thinking of what I could make quickly, I remembered those <a href="http://www.dragonfly-fabrics.com/spring-scrapbook-in-petal-pink/">cheater prints</a> I purchased from <a href="http://www.dragonfly-fabrics.com/">Dragon Fly Fabrics</a> a month or so ago. It was absolutely perfect for what I had in mind. I quickly ironed my fabric and basted it to a piece of grey fleece and was ready to get quilting!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15760798005" title="DSC_0379 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0379" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7520/15760798005_fbd7f3c6b5_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have never not used batting when making a quilt before, but I am loving the weight and drape that this quilt has with a little less bulk. The fleece backing makes it super snuggly still, but this feels more like a blanket than a full on quilt. I will definitely be incorporating this technique more often!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15575622417" title="DSC_0380 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0380" height="424" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5608/15575622417_357d9bae80_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
I followed the faux patchwork seam lines quilting 1/4" on either side of every other square, so approximately 4" apart. I think from start to finish this took me about an hour. While it was beautiful as is, I felt I needed to add something a little extra to make up for my lack of actual quilt making.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15737088856" title="DSC_0377 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0377" height="424" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3956/15737088856_609de23b31_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Enter my <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Cricut-Explore-Electronic-Cutting-Machine/dp/B00I00RAUA/ref=sr_1_1?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1415715663&sr=1-1&keywords=cricut+explore">Cricut Explore</a>. Of course second to my trusty sewing machine, this is by far my favorite new crafting toy. I've been using it quite a bit lately making paper and vinyl projects, so when I read about how nicely it cut fabric, I decided to give it a try. I planned out a circle scallop and text "n" for baby girl's name, applied some steam a seam and got to cutting. It worked beautifully and just as I had imagined. I used a zig zag stitch to complete the applique and just love this quilt to pieces.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15758921031" title="DSC_0369 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0369" height="427" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7467/15758921031_be247a10d0_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
I seriously had to talk myself out of keeping this for myself because, you know, I also have a baby girl who's name starts with N! You can bet I will be using my Cricut to personalize baby quilts more often (like every time) and showing them to you here on the blog. <br />
<br />
This quilt will be going in the mail this week so it can begin getting it's baby love soon!<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>For the record: Cricut does not know me from Adam, I purchased the machine on my own and am passing along its rave reviews to you!</i></span><br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm happy to introduce SewCraftyJess' newest sponsor, <a href="http://www.ladybellefabric.com/">Lady Belle Fabric</a>! I'm very excited to be working with Brooke, the lady behind Lady Belle Fabric, to bring you not only another great place to shop, but a <b>$50 gift certificate</b> (see below for entry details) to spend as you wish at Lady Belle Fabric!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.ladybellefabric.com/">Lady Belle Fabric</a> is a new online fabric shop that Brooke and her husband Rob started a few months ago. Brooke loves fabric (she is a self diagnosed fabric hoarder, just like the rest of us!) and all the beautiful colors and patterns that modern quilting has brought about. The name Lady Belle came from their beloved dog who sadly passed away this summer. They channeled Lady's beauty, entertaining personality and even her little bits of sass into Lady Belle Fabric's name.<br />
<br />
Brooke told me, "I was wanting to sell a beautiful moment. You know the moment, when the fabric comes together, the ideas of the pattern all click, and the project starts coming to life. Most quilts are gifts to others, an heirloom of love, hard work and beauty. Those are things which Lady is to me. She left a beautiful moment on my heart. What better way to show others how much I care about their fabric choices then to name my store after the girl I loved so dearly." Sorry, should have warned you to have your tissues nearby!<br />
<br />
And now for the fabric. Oh Brooke certainly has an eye for beautiful fabrics, and I think I want everything she has in her store. Not to mention that orders over $150 ship free AND everything else ships at a flat rate of $5.75! <a href="http://www.ladybellefabric.com/">Lady Belle Fabric</a> also does everything in their power to provide same day shipping. That means you get your pretty fabrics as fast as possible!<br />

I'm loving this pretty color combo of coral, turquoise and lime featured in <a href="http://www.ladybellefabric.com/collections/tula-pink/products/bumble-by-tula-pink-for-free-spirit">Tula Pink's Bumble line</a>. Totally makes me think of summer and a juicy watermelon. Or honeydew. Either way 100% delicious. <br />

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/10394703365" title="DSC_0018 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0018" height="331" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2865/10394703365_8ca7372536.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
To say this post is a tad bit belated is an understatement. As I finished this project up just before Halloween. Halloween of <i>last year</i>. The whole having a baby thing made my brain go on the fritz for some time, so when I was looking back through my Flickr feed, and found these pics I realized I never blogged about this little guy! Without wanting him to feel neglected, I figured he's already waited over a year for his time in the spotlight, so who cares if <i>two</i> Halloween's have now passed since he was finished.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/10394700014" title="DSC_0022 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0022" height="331" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7433/10394700014_11a896a0d4.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
While my quilting and sewing has definitely slowed down, I am really enjoying cross stitching at the moment. I love that its a small project that is 100% portable and perfectly conducive to background tv watching while I'm stitching away. My husband has recently accepted a new job, that means no more nights and weekends (woohoo insert happy dance!!) and while I am thrilled to have him home every evening, I now have zero motivation to head downstairs after Nora is in bed to sew, and instead have been snuggling up on the couch as the hubs and I catch up on the DVR que (we haven't even started this season of Homeland yet!). <br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/10394883303" title="DSC_0020 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0020" height="331" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3741/10394883303_1c5db35c6b.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
So while my sewing machine is probably staging a protest from lack of use, I'm keeping my fingers busy working on a few adorable cross stitch patterns from the <a href="http://thefrostedpumpkinstitchery.bigcartel.com/">Frosted Pumpkin Stitchery</a>. Their patterns are just so darn adorable, that I can't get enough. This one is last years <a href="http://thefrostedpumpkinstitchery.bigcartel.com/product/halloween-spooky-sampler">Halloween Spooky Sampler</a>. After working on this project last fall, I switched from stitching on Aida cloth to linen, and my like for cross stitch last year has turned into a full blown love with the linen. The stitches just pop off the fabric! I have half a mind to restitch this sampler on linen, but that will have to wait for another day. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/10394703365" title="DSC_0018 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC_0018" height="331" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2865/10394703365_8ca7372536.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />

I just love how Amanda and Ashleigh have made cross stitching cute and youthful. They seriously don't have a pattern that am not in love with. I have stayed up to date with the <a href="http://thefrostedpumpkinstitchery.bigcartel.com/product/2014-sampler">Once Upon a Time 2104 Sampler</a>, that is destined for framing and a spot on Nora's wall once its done and am almost done with last year's <a href="http://thefrostedpumpkinstitchery.bigcartel.com/product/12-days-of-christmas-pdf-cross-stitch-pattern">12 Days of Christmas Sampler</a>, which should be finished just in time for the release of this years <a href="http://thefrostedpumpkinstitchery.bigcartel.com/product/christmas-celebration-sampler">Christmas Celebration Sampler</a>. Whew!<br />

<br />
So anyways, happy belated Halloween! You can bet you'll be seeing more cross stitch projects on the blog, as I'm resolving to try and post more progress pics, as things are moving at a much slower pace than they used to, and I'm okay with that.<br />
<br />
p.s. be sure to check back here tomorrow, a little birdie said there will be a great giveaway from a new sponsor!<br />

Happy happy birthday to our little peanut! I cannot believe just one year ago we were <a href="http://www.sewcraftyjess.blogspot.com/2013/10/wip-wednesday-newborn-edition.html">welcoming you into this world</a>. You bring so much joy and happiness to our lives that we truly cannot imagine our world without you in it. <br />

One of the things I had always planned on doing from the day Nora was born was making tons and tons of baby clothes and dresses for her. Now that didn't exactly go as planned, as to date I have made exactly three dresses (including these <a href="http://www.sewcraftyjess.blogspot.com/2014/05/a-geranium-or-two.html">two Geranium dresses</a>), but when her first pictures were just around the corner I decided she HAD to wear a handmade dress by her momma. <br />

<br />
I had purchased a bundle of patterns from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/GingerBabyPatterns?ref=l2-shopheader-name">Ginger Baby Patterns</a> on Etsy a few months back and decided to make the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/transaction/214018047">Candy Girl Tiered Dress</a>. I just love the gathered elastic top detail and the ruffled gathered sleeves. I was debating on a few fabric options and ultimately decided to cut into my <a href="http://www.roseroomquilts.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=13_14&products_id=29">Heather Ross Far Far Away bundle</a>, because every little girl needs a pink unicorn dress in their life. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15589303781" title="kelly-13 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="kelly-13" height="512" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5607/15589303781_a2cb58e1d0_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I just love the fabric flower detail, the dress is great on its own, but the center flower adds just the extra pop this dress needs. I would highly recommend this pattern, it was a breeze to sew together, oodles of step by step pictures and no pattern pieces! Everything is straight rectangular cuts of fabric, perfect for this quilter at heart. It was also a quick sew. I easily finished the dress in one nap time, having already prewashed my fabric ahead of time. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15405345619" title="kelly-5 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="kelly-5" height="512" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5598/15405345619_5e7899bef5_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I'd say Nora is a fan! I know I missed my window of prime dress wearing weather this year, but I fully intend on wearing this dress through the rest of the fall with a long sleeved onesie and leggings, and I don't think Nora would object. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkellyaud/15589305611" title="kelly-6 by Jessica Kelly, on Flickr"><img alt="kelly-6" height="640" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3933/15589305611_6268b9f9dc_z.jpg" width="512" /></a><br />
<br />
If you have any toddler sewing tutorials, I'd love to hear about them! I have my eye on the Little Pearl Dress that <a href="http://fairyfacedesigns.blogspot.com/2014/09/little-pearl-dress.html">Sarah made for her little girl</a> from the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Liberty-Love-Projects-Featuring-Fabrics/dp/1607056267/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1413899767&sr=8-1&keywords=liberty+love">Liberty Love book</a> I have on my shelf, now that Nora is big enough to wear the smallest size!</div>
