Finished!
It's finished! I absolutely love the way this turned out. It measures 76 inches x 67 inches, and is by far the largest quilt I've made! I think my arms were actually sore from moving this bad boy around while quilting.
It's so bright and just looks like it belongs on a beach somewhere! I don't know that I'll actually let anyone use it on the beach for fear of it getting ruined (haha) but I think I at least need to take it to the beach and get some pics of it at home on the sand.
Here's a pic of the back of the quilt. I used a few of the leftover blocks from the front and sashed them with some Kona Charcoal and then used a bright aqua for the rest of the back. The picture doesnt show it very well, but it shows off the stippling wonderfully!
I've determined that I really hate hand sewing the binding. I came across this tutorial from Rita at Red Pepper Quilts and have been using it to machine sew my binding on the last few quilting projects I've done. I think I've gotten progressively better on each quilt, and this time I didnt even have to go back and resew any parts of the binding! Its much quicker and much less of a pain in the butt than hand sewing, and I think it looks pretty good.
Just one more pic...
I'm not quite sure what to start next...stay tuned!

Wow, that turned out stunning........so glad you're going to be careful with it !
ReplyDeleteI bound my latest little quilt totally by machine, too, and just love it !
It looks great! Nice work!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous - followed here from Flickr
ReplyDeletethanks! I'm definitly a fan of sewing the binding down by machine...Dolly I saw your quilt, it was just precious!
ReplyDeletewow...gorgeous quilt...i lvoe the bright coloured blocks
ReplyDeleteThat sure is one yummy quilt. I also use Rita's binding tutorial. It sure gives a great finish.
ReplyDeleteWow! Love the bright colors, and the backing is great too!
ReplyDeleteWow is right! It's FAB!!
ReplyDeleteI love the colors! They really pop. Gorgeous job!
ReplyDeleteThat quilt just pops right off the screen! Very fun and summer-y. And yeah, I wouldn't let anyone take it to the beach either.
ReplyDeletefabulous! love the movement and the colors are awesome!
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous, happy quilt! Well done!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link to the binding tutorial. I really don't mind binding by hand, but in the summer months a quilt is really too warm to hold on your lap, so it would be nice to have a good alternative.
What fun blocks! You are right, this looks like it belongs on a beach, for sure. When I saw the back I actually thought it looked like the black sand beaches in Hawaii, with the bright blue water and four beach towels laid out in a row. Nice work!
ReplyDeleteStunning! Love the colors and the way the white sashing just pops and looks like its 3D.
ReplyDeleteI've always hand finished my bindings but I've been thinking for small things I'd like to try machine finishing-thanks for the link!
This is beautiful! The black and white print squares really ground the brights and provide ballance. Love it! I have been using the Red Pepper binding method and I love it! I detest hand sewing it on and I do a cruddy job and her method saved me!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilting job and beautiful colors! I'm still not very good at machine bindings, yours looks great. Thanks so much for linking up to Finished for Friday and congratulations on a great finish!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt. I love the colors and design of this one!! Have a great weekend!!!
ReplyDeleteThat is so beautiful!! The colors just really pop out at you - and your back is great! I like hand sewing the back of my binding - it's usually the last time I get to "commune" with the quilt before I send it off to another home - but I can understand how it can be tedious. Your machine bindings look great!
ReplyDeleteon the beach!? i would freak out the first time sand got all over it, because it is so gorgeous. what a great finish
ReplyDeleteI love this!!! So bright and cheerful and I love the alternate blocks that break up the colours. It would look great photographed at the beach. A great finish!!
ReplyDeleteToo pretty!!! Great finish!!
ReplyDeleteAwesome finish. Yeah I tried machine binding too a couple of times now, not for a large quilt but just smaller projects. It's a quick learning curve and I agree that the results are good. I still stick with hand binding for most of my projects because I like the look of it more. But some projects are great for machine binding :).
ReplyDeleteThis is SO cute! I love it!
ReplyDeleteJessica this look so awesome! Love all the bright fabrics and the pattern.
ReplyDeletethanks everyone!!
