geese any which way

DSC_0111

I've been seeking relief from the recent heat wave down in my sewing room!  Now don't get me wrong, we've done our share of sweating it out at cookouts and family get togethers as well, but I've certainly not been complaining while hiding out in my downstairs "cave" which is a solid 5 to 10 degrees cooler than the rest of the house.  The hubs thinks I'm crazy wearing a sweatshirt when its 100 degrees outside, but its cold down there!!

Ever since my stack of Essex linen arrived from Pink Castle Fabrics, I've been itching to sew something with it.  Believe it or not, I've never used linen in a quilt before, and thought that this was the time to break that trend.  I used Essex linen in Sand and pulled a bunch of pinks, light greys, and a few pretty aquas and melon-y oranges, as seen here.

I'm thinking of quilting this little guy with straight lines following the sort of zig zag shape the opposite rows of geese make.  I may even throw some pink pearle cotton into the mix for a few lines of hand quilting as well, just to change things up a bit.  (Seeing Bree's hand quilted postage stamp quilt has me inspired!)

On a complete aside, I'm still getting used to my new camera, and have been trying to play around with the manual mode (using the bajillion tutorials I've pinned), and I'm not sure if its the picture, or maybe just the display, but I keep getting these sort of hazy wavy lines (sort of reminds me of on a hot hot day when you look far in the distant and see that sort of hazy "movement"??) mostly when I try and take up close pictures (if that makes any sense, which it may not).  Now I swear it was even there when I uploaded my pics to edit them (and when I saved the picture) but when I uploaded to Flickr, the mystery wavy-ness was gone.  It seems to happen mostly with solids it was very apparent when I drew that arrow, I swear!!

Anywho, just thought I'd see if anyone else has run into this before, and if there is a simple solution to fix it (very likely operator error).  Thanks for any helpful hints or tips!!

  1. Hi Kelly, does this shadiness also show the display on your camera when you look at the photo after making them? It's weird it's gone when you upload in Flickr, perhaps it's something to do with your photo editor on your computer, that would make sense.
Anyways, I just dropped by to thank you for the pattern you put on the Moda Bake shop. I made 2 blocks to show to the girls on my Yahoo group, as a lottery block pattern. Love it!

  2. Very pretty quilt top! I sometimes have weird lines on my photos - to me it looks almost like the shadow of a window screen, only sometimes though. But my camera is a very basic point and shoot so it's not likely to be the same issue. Hope you figure it out!

  3. Oooh, I now love pink and gray, thanks to this quilt. With the orange, it reminds me of watermelon and canteloupe!

  4. Hmm, I can't recall seeing lines like that on my pictures before, but I'm pretty sure that Flickr doesn't do anything to the photos, unless you open up Aviary inside of Flickr, so that's really interesting! I'm really loving this quilt a boatload. Pink hand-stitching sounds lovely!!

  5. Hi! That's so beautiful - I love the colours and the pattern! I have had similar 'waves' sometimes and I thought it was about the fabric. It happenes only with solids and could have something to do with the light because it doesn't happen always. If I take several photos just moving a little bit, I get also good ones. x Teje

  7. Pretty colours... although I am all about the pink lately! I've never tried the linen in Sand but it looks lovely - will have to get some. As always your points are perfect!

  8. I have no idea about your camera issues, but I really like the quilt. I'm such a fan of flying geese and essex linen. The bright, cheery fabrics you used make this such a fun number

  9. This is just gorgeous! I love the color palette with the linen. Did you find the linen difficult to work with at all? I've never used it in a quilt.

  10. Loving the geese! I think the only think Flickr does is compress the pics, which may solve the issue. I seem to get that issue with linen on occasions, depending on how the light is hitting it when I take the pic

  11. I'm guessing what you're describing with your camera is what's referred to as a moire pattern: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moire_pattern

I don't know the details of your camera, but this is pretty common when the camera takes pictures at a very high resolution such that you can see the weave of the fabric, and then your editing software shrinks it down to show the image to fit on your monitor and it over-exaggerates the weave pattern. (I am overly simplifying what happens, but I assume most people don't really care about what the computer is doing. :)

Flickr will often actually re-size the image instead of just showing it smaller. Again, I am over-simplifying things a bit, but I hope that makes sense? The upside is, it's just an effect of your monitor and your editing software, and you likely don't need to worry about it. If it goes away when you zoom into the picture and it's showing at 100% original size, you're fine. :)

For the record, your quilt is gorgeous, and I love reading your blog! :D

  12. What a very pretty quilt! I wouldn't have guessed that was linen. I've bought some to try in a quilt and haven't gotten to it yet. The color combination you've put together is lovely. Very refreshing.

  13. Looking good. I'm surprised everyone doesn't want to be down there with you!

  15. Adorable quilt! I love the colors. I don't know what to make of the wavy issues, though.

  16. My canon does the same thing! Usually on solids in bright natural light, up close. I haven't done anything about it, I just take lots of pics and don't use the ones that happens in. Sorry I can't help!

This is really beautiful. Did you have to starch or anything? I have trouble mixing linen with cotton.

  18. It looks beautiful! I love the idea of adding some hand quilting, I'm glad mine inspired you to do the same. :) It's time-consuming but totally worth it.

As for the lines in the photos, I can't see them here, but I know exactly what you're talking about. I have the same problem & can't ever seem to get around it so I just deal with it. It is odd that they don't show up once you put them onto Flickr, I've never noticed whether mine are still messed up at that point or not.

  19. What a cheerful and happy quilt! I can't help you with camera problems but love the linen in this quilt, even though I have also never used linen in a quilt, only other crafty projects. Very pretty!
